Travel: As many in Dubai’s design community jet off for the holidays, at MADE. we decided it was perfect timing to visit our favourite design hotels, admired for their inspiring architecture, interiors or a design-led ethos.
Ace Hotel & Swim Club Palm Springs was a neglected treasure — a mid-century desert modern former Westward Ho with a Denny’s — until the Ace Hotel boutique hotel chain dusted it off and gave it some love to celebrate its design heritage. The 173-room hotel, spa and resort in Palm Springs, California is within biking distance of downtown and close to Joshua Tree, the Salton Sea, Salvation Mountain and many of Palm Springs’ popular mid-century architecture.
The first Ace Hotel was founded in Seattle in 1999, it immediately set a new benchmark for hospitality with its quirky and uber cool pioneering design. Designer, Eric Hentz, from Mallet Incorporated, and Ace founder, Alex Calderwood, repurposed a one time 28-room half-way house for maritime workers into a hotel for the “urban nomad.” Ace Seattle quickly became a desirable destination for creatives and was the among the first hotels or cafes to design its interiors with vintage retro or reclaimed furniture and contemporary art.
