With a Design Days Dubai installation already under their belt and a busy work schedule ahead, D04, the all-female architecture and design studio founded by American University of Sharjah graduates has a bright future.

After featuring D04’s Delamination installation, Made Journal was inspired by the young team’s enthusiasm and passion for contextual architecture and design. We just had to find out more and so sat down with D04 to talk all things design.

Who are the architects and designers behind D04?

The founders Fatima Al Zaabi, Khalda El Jack, Noora Al Awar and Reyan Hanafi graduated from American University of Sharjah with a bachelor degree in Architecture. Each member of the team participated in Design Days Dubai 2014 in collaboration with FN design, WTD Magazine and Bloomingdales Dubai.

Fatima Al Zaabi and Noora Al Awar presented their recent work in Abu Dhabi Art 2014 as part of the Design Programme with Abu Dhabi Tourism and Cultural Authority, British Council and Abu Dhabi Art. Khalda El Jack’s recent work was selected and displayed as part of Islamopolitan Exhibition curated by Khalid Shafaar and Giuseppe Moscatello with Maraya Art Centre. Reyan Hanafi took part in the Dress the Mannequin Auction. Her most recent product design was exhibited in the 7th Ramadan Art Bazaar in Abu Dhabi and won second place in this year’s Sheikha Manal YAA for the Design Category.

Please tell us about your work? Architecture? Interiors?

We come from architecture backgrounds but are design enthusiasts and are not afraid to tap into all design fields. Most our work involves installations and interior work recently.

Am I right in that the it is an all woman team?

Yes!

Is there a particular D04 aesthetic?

Our design practice is centered around the notion of product led by the region, culture, crafts and resources.

What has been your favourite D04 project to date? And, what are you looking forward to?

‘Delamination’ will always have a special place in our hearts as it was our first built piece. There are two big events coming up and we are so excited, so stayed tuned with D04’s activities to find out more!
