Influenced by the return to craft, Future Past, one of four Dulux 2016 colour and design trends takes its cues from the divergence of steampunk with modern design – creating a new version of the old.
Evoking the atmosphere of a stately gentlemen’s club of old, as we move towards the future, the paint specialist says Future Past reflects our seeking of reassurance from our past. We are drawn to contemporary designs that evoke reassuring memories. Here, design explores analogue processes, customising and reinvigorating old techniques with the enhancement of new technology.
“Our reality is one of a digital world where we seek comfort in nostalgic references that ground us in times of uncertainty.”
“Reflecting on colourful eras we widen our inspiration to include design influences from the 60s and 70s.”
Dulux’s final 2016 design and colour trend celebrates the lighter aspects of the new retro movement, which mixes together iconic elements from across the mid to late century. This theme explores a more youthful expression, with new generations discovering these influences for the first time and creating their own remixed designs and style – uncovering unexpected combinations and a time when the introduction of modern materials, such as plastic, were explored to result in new technologies and fluid forms
