Stumbling across &tradition‘s Mayor Sofa at D.tales‘ Dubai concept store has been a revelation. With soft, arching curves, complemented by a high tufted back, elegant buttons and a lush colour palette, the 1939 Arne Jacobsen and Flemming Lassen is a design classic. And, let’s not even talk about the comfort factor!
Mayor Sofa has been respectfully resurrected by the renowned Danish design studio, along with other furniture and lighting pieces from Scandinavian masters, such as Verner Panton, Jörn Utzon and Sofie Refer, among others.
The coveted Mayor Sofa was first created by Jacobsen and Lassen as something comfortable for visitors to sit on at the the city hall in Søllerød, Denmark, of which Jacobsen served as lead architect, designing everything from the structure’s appearance to the design of furniture and even door handles.
The three-seater Mayor Sofa is a straight-forward, minimal canapé, softened by rich wool upholstery in ice-cream tones and chic grey or black, with elegant legs in solid oak.
Craft meets art. Function meets form. Material meets potential – &tradtion’s mantra reflects the company’s desire to celebrate Nordic tradition and heritage, while pairing these values with innovative contemporary design. However, &Tradition not only recreates furniture and lighting by the Nordic masters, its also works with a carefully selected list of present day international designers, while scouring the design fields for future icons.
Now that &tradition’s pretty in pink and dove grey Mayor Sofas have been spotted at Spring restaurant’s beautiful dining space in the new wing of London’s iconic Somerset House, this jaunty design treasure is reliving its 40s hey day. In comparison, our sofas now just seem, well…boorish.
